Theatre design graduate Patrick Hayes split a $20K grand prize in an intense light show competition in Las Vegas!

Theatre Graduate Wins Lighting Design Competition, Hefty Prize

February 17, 2016

A BW graduate's lighting design "hit the jackpot" at a recent competition in Las Vegas. BW theatre design graduate Patrick Hayes and his graduate school partner Alex Stevens entered the design and programming competition Live Design International (LDI).

Chosen to advance to the final competition along with two other teams, Hayes and Stevens, currently in grad school at Carnegie Mellon University, were flown to Las Vegas and went through a rigorous final stage, competing under pressure to adapt their preprogrammed light show to the equipment on set within thirty minutes.

When time was up, the teams performed their light shows in front of an audience and a panel of judges. At the end of the night, the Hayes-Stevens team won first place, taking home $20,000, a lightboard, and their own personal boards.

Hayes reported his success in an email to his undergraduate mentor, Professor Jeff Herrmann, BW's resident lighting designer in the theater department. "Thank you for getting me interested in lighting. I wouldn't be anywhere near where I am today if it wasn't for you," Hayes wrote.
