As a finance major, you'll examine the sources and uses of funds within an organization as well as calculate returns and risks associated with capital budgeting.

Well respected in the business community, BW's Finance program prepares you for success. You'll learn from professors whose backgrounds include decades of corporate, government and nonprofit experience both national and international in scope.

Students use the Bloomberg terminals in the BW Business Research Center.

The Business Research Center features 12 terminals equipped with Bloomberg Professional service.


A comprehensive rigorous program, finance is offered as a major and minor. You'll examine the sources and uses of funds within an organization, the returns and risks related to an organization's working capital, and capital budgeting decisions.

The finance major prepares students to:

  • Recall business terms, concepts, and principles and effectively communicate these, through both oral and written means, using the language of business
  • Utilize critical thinking skills to analyze information and produce improved business decisions and generate effective recommendations for better course of action or opportunity for improvement
  • Demonstrate relevant application of business knowledge
  • Exhibit high standards of ethical awareness and conduct and recognize ethical issues businesses/people face in today’s world
  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the content areas and tools necessary for a finance professional
  • Analyze financial decisions using tools, techniques, and theory commonly used by finance professionals

Experiential learning bridges classroom study with real-world opportunities. You can enhance your studies through internships, fellowships, study abroad and a variety of co-curricular and other learning opportunities.

Investment Club

Students experience real life investing by managing a six-figure portfolio of real stocks from the BW Endowment. The students make decisions based on their own research of equity securities. Members have attended a shareholders meeting, visited the New York Stock Exchange and competed with other colleges in academic competitions. A number of club alumni have received internships and employment at local and national firms specializing in finance and stock analysis.

Thomas KasperThomas Kasper ’15 is finance fellow at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland. BW coursework provided the analytical tools to understand the complex and dynamic U.S. healthcare market. Internships enabled the North Olmsted, Ohio, native to explore opportunities in his field and land a job after graduation.

Le'Anna MillerLe’Anna Miller ’14 is founder of BabyMunch Organics and auditing associate at Ernst & Young in downtown Cleveland. While at BW, Le’Anna interned at the Center for Innovation and Growth. Her entrepreneurial team took top prize at the 2011 Entrepreneurship Immersion Week.

Ally SmithAlly Smith ’13 is fund accountant at The Townsend Group in Cleveland. She is a graduate of BW’s 3/2 program, earning bachelor’s degrees in accounting and finance and an MBA in 5 years. Study abroad in Iceland gave the Strongsville, Ohio, native international experience that has distinguished her in job interviews.

Matt BowenMatt Bowen '12 is investment banking analyst in the mergers and acquisitions group at UBS Investment Bank in New York City. He advises on a variety of corporate transactions for clients across several industries. Extracurricular activities and internships helped the Tiffin, Ohio, native secure a job in investment banking.

Deanna StovicekDeanna Stovicek ’12 is assistant administrator for the department of critical care medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. She holds a Master of Health Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. BW courses provided the Willoughby, Ohio, native with a solid foundation to build upon in internships and graduate school.

Matthew DiamondMatthew Diamond ‘11 is finance manager at the Cleveland Clinic. Matthew joined the Cleveland Clinic through its finance fellowship program after learning about the program from BW career services staff. He is currently MBA candidate at John Carroll University. He is from Ashtabula, Ohio.

Justin NovakJustin Novak ’11 is manager in the assurance practice at Ernst & Young in Cleveland. He holds an MBA and bachelor’s degrees in accounting and finance from BW. Justin interned at Ernst & Young and obtained a full-time position with the company two years prior to graduation. He is from Strongsville, Ohio.

Jameson D. ShipleyJameson D. Shipley '10 is senior manager of global logistics and supply chain for Ralph Lauren in New York City. Internships were pivotal experiences that helped him identify a passion for international business. The Richfield, Ohio, native also studied abroad in China and worked in BW’s business planning clinic.
