Dr. Jonathon Fagert’s primary teaching interests are in statics, mechanics, structural analysis and design, and sensing. His research is highly interdisciplinary and focuses on combining physical and data-based models for indoor occupant monitoring using structural vibration sensing. This research field fuses concepts from civil/structural engineering, electrical/computer engineering, computer science and the medical domain. His focus has been on how to leverage structural vibration sensing to monitor human gait health. Through this research he has collaborated with Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and elder care facilities in the Pittsburgh area, including Baptist Homes and Vincentian Homes.

Prior to his Ph.D. studies and joining BW, he spent over five years as a practicing structural engineer, with a specialization in building design. His design experience includes new building design and renovation/rehabilitation of existing structures, primarily in the greater New York City area. From his years as a practicing structural engineer, he holds a professional engineering license in New York State.
